Under normal circumstances, if you throw anything up it would certainly come down. The fact is, the earth’s gravity keeps everything down on the surface and also forces anything to return to the surface if thrown up. And people were so used to this earthly limit that it became common wisdom that whatever goes up must come down. Until about sixty years ago, nothing thrown or shot up could beat the earth’s gravity. Then, it appeared impossible for any human or object on the earth surface to defy the all-powerful gravity and escape into the outer space, which refers to the world beyond the earth’s gravitational influence.
However, certain problem solvers changed the whole notion of gravity being unbeatable. First of all, they formulated the escape speed and calculated it to be roughly11.2 kilometers per second. Moving up at the escape speed, an object on earth surface will beat the earth’s gravity; that is, it will not be turned back by the gravitational hand of planet Earth. After determining the escape speed, they built the spacecraft, the machine that can move up at the escape speed. So in 1957, an artificial spacecraft beat the gravity and escaped into the outer space. Indeed, it was a huge breakthrough for humankind. And that was actually the event that ushered in a new era of space exploration which exists till today.
For every youth today, the lesson of the above account is that you must not allow yourself to be limited by certain unfounded beliefs. After all, there was a time when beating the earth’s gravity was thought impossible. But now, humankind has devised a reliable way to beat the gravity. And just as humankind went beyond this earthly limit, so also you as an individual can go beyond certain limit posed by your background, gender, skin colour, physical disability, nationality, or ethnic belief. Whatever the nature of the limit staring you in the face – academic, professional, entrepreneurial etc – you must always remind yourself and imbibe the fact that you can beat the limit if you set your mind on it and also work tenaciously at it.
